AN award-wining student has donated her prizemoney to charity to help with cancer research.

The 16-year-old recently took the top honour in the annual mayor’s ball design competition in which a host of images were created by Darlington College Level 3 graphics, photography and fine art students.

Her image of old Peelers will adorn the cops and robbers theme posters and menus at the annual mayor’s charity ball after being selected by the mayor, former policeman Brian Jones, his wife Doris and ball sponsor Rob Maxey, of sawblade and cutting tools specialists Ernest Bennett.

But Maisie, who wants to read a degree in sustainable product design, has decided to donate her prizemoney to Cancer Research UK.

Maisie said:  “Cancer seems to affect everyone. I don’t know anyone who does not know someone who has developed it.”

Tutor Pippa Eeles said: “Maisie’s gesture is typical of her caring and generous nature. She is not only a very talented designer but also exhibits a very well developed social conscience which is a credit to her.”

Coun Brian Jones said: “Maisie’s act of generosity is commendable and shows how aware many young people are of the world about them. Her designs were fantastic and the donation of the prize really does warm my heart and makes me even more thankful that we have Darlington College in our town.”

Maisie’s winning design will be used on posters, tickets and table menus for the annual mayor’s ball, which is due to be staged next April to raise funds for St Teresa’s Hospice, the Samaritans, the 700 Club and the charity Breathe Easy
