The qualification is focused towards learners seeking to gain a vocationally related qualification in sport and active leisure. This practical focused qualification will develop the skills to plan and instruct gym-based exercise, plan and implement sport and leisure activities. This qualification also focuses on the development of interpersonal and communication skills, self-evaluation and reflection.
Learners will also develop knowledge of risks and hazards in sports and active leisure, planning own fitness programme, assisting a leader of sports or active leisure activities to plan and deliver an activity sports, physical activities for children and how the body works. Learners will also enhance their understanding of safeguarding and child protection, employment rights and responsibilities in the sport and active leisure industry as a whole.
If you have not achieved a C grade or above in English or maths, you will as part of your course be required to work towards this as part of your study programme. You will be given the opportunity to go on work experience at certain times during your course.
To develop your employability opportunities you may also be given enrichment classes. This may focus upon additional qualifications, industrial updating and career preparation.
There are no formal entry requirements for this course. You will be required to attend and interview and have a keen interest in the industry.
A good level of ICT knowledge is required.

Teaching will be predominately practical and will reflect a work based environment where relevant. The curriculum will be combined with ICT and theoretical session aimed to deliver the information and practical to underpin and assess knowledge.
The Sports and Active Leisure Diploma Level 1 aims to:
- Achieve a nationally recognised Level 1 vocationally specific qualification
- Give full-time learners the opportunity to enter employment in the sport and active leisure sector or to progress to Level 2 sport programme
- Give learners the opportunity to develop a range of techniques, personal skills and attributes essential for successful performance in working life.
The assessment will be a combination of written reports, presentations, posters/leaflets and practical assessments.
The course lasts for one year and the students must fully complete the year to achieve the Level 1 Diploma in Sport and Active leisure. The course will require 3 full days in college each week.
You can progress onto a Level 2 Sports course.
