This is an ideal course for any student wishing to further their knowledge with Automotive Studies. Ideally you will have completed an automotive course at foundation level or had some experience in a garage environment before joining this course.
This course leads to a Level 2 diploma and is an excellent stepping stone towards an Apprenticeship.
If you have not achieved a C grade or above in English or maths, you will as part of your course be required to work towards this as part of your study programme. You will be given the opportunity to go on work experience at certain times during your course.
To develop your employability opportunities you may also be given enrichment classes. This may focus upon additional qualifications, industrial updating and career preparation.
There is no direct entry from GCSEs onto this course. You will need to have completed the Level 1 Diploma.
You will be required to attend an interview at the college for all courses and Apprenticeships and we will request a school or college report.

You will spend approximately six hours a week on practical development in our fully equipped motor vehicle workshop. You will also be timetabled for approximately six hours a week of classroom study, two hours of Functional Skills development and tutorial allocation.
Work experience is also part of this program.
You will be working towards practical and theory based tests. The practical tests will take place in the workshop and you will also sit four online exams. These are some of the elements you will study:
- Health and safety and good housekeeping
- Supporting job roles
- Materials, fabrication, tools and measuring devices
- Inspection, repair and replacement of high performance tyres
- Light vehicle maintenance
- Inspection and replacement of light vehicle exhaust systems
- Inspection and replacement of light vehicle braking systems and components
You will need to provide a pair of overalls, safety boots and safety glasses. Information on obtaining these will be available during enrolment. You will also need to buy a workbook which will cost approximately £20.
On completing this course you can progress onto a full time Level 3 Diploma in Vehicle Maintenance.
