Course overview

This introduction to photography is a practical course which enables you to get the most out of your digital camera. Elements of creative composition will be explored and picture building skills will be developed. You will use modern state-of-the art equipment and facilities in the college's Media Design Centre which includes PC and Mac computer suites and photography studio facilities.

The course is suitable for digital camera users (compact or SLR) who have a keen interest in photography, but have little or no previous knowledge. The course will cover basic technical aspects and how to use equipment and accessories.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course. You will need a commitment to work hard and it is essential to complete. Having your own camera is preferred; however, we can loan you a camera for workshop sessions.

Registration. Tour of facilities, course introduction and overview. Camera setup and handling.

Weeks 2 and 3
Creative elements of composition. Developing a creative eye for image making.

Week 4
Basic camera controls, settings and functions.

Week 5
Equipment and accessories. Camera care.

Week 6
Exposure compensation and ISO.

Week 7
Moving on from auto: aperture priority and depth of field.

Week 8
Moving on from auto: shutter priority and capturing movement.

Weeks 9 and 10
Low light photography: Painting with light.

Week 11
Choosing the right lens and how to use lens filters.

Week 12
Course roundup and recap of course content. Discuss progression onto intermediate course.

You will receive a college certificate of attendance

What next

Progress into a supporting role in photography, advertising or art and design.

This course is designed to lead onto our intermediate and then advanced digital photography courses. This course will also aid the progressions of anyone who wishes to go onto any of our level 1 or 2 programmes in art, design or media. Many of our students progress on to our other Adobe Certified Associate courses so they are fully trained in the full Adobe Creative Suite of software packages, specifically our Adobe Photoshop programme.

This course does not qualify for fee remission - therefore fees are payable.
Course fees are payable to Darlington College. Registration and membership fees may be payable. All course fees are per year.
