Course overview

If you love using original ideas to create something, then working in art and design will be a fun and rewarding experience that enables you to demonstrate your artistic flair. This practical course has been developed in consultation with employers in the design sector of the creative industries to ensure you learn the skills and behaviours that will give you the best opportunity to be successful in the art and design field. You will develop a professional and diverse range of skills within art and design - to strengthen your creativity culminating in the production of a professional portfolio enabling progression onto a Level 3 course, an apprenticeship or employment. You will need to be a creative person with a keen interest in art and design and have commitment and determination to succeed.

If you have not achieved a C grade or above in English or maths, you will be required to work towards this as part of your study programme.  You will be given the opportunity to go on work experience at certain times during your course.

To develop your employability opportunities you may also be given enrichment classes. This may focus upon additional qualifications, industrial updating and career preparation.

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs at 3 points or grades D - E or above, including GCSE maths and English, as well as a satisfactory school report. We will request a school or college report and you will attend an interview at the college. It would be advantageous to bring a portfolio of your art work along with you to your interview.

Studying and learning

The qualification allows you to learn about art and design through practical vocational projects where you apply creative thinking and production techniques to develop designs and artwork both collaboratively and individually. This enables you to gain skills in teamwork and communication as well as learn about technical production skills. At the end of the qualification you will understand the design process and be able to take a concept through to realisation. You will understand through practical engagement the work that goes into design and realising design.

The course comprises of the following units:

Unit 1 - Introduction to Design Thinking

Unit 2 - Introduction to Design Production Techniques

Unit 3 - Working with Client Briefs

Unit 4 - Designing Products

Unit 5 - Developing a Design Portfolio

Unit 6 - Creative Design Project (Assessed externally by Pearson)

How will I be assessed

You will develop your skills through a mixture of practical workshop and theory based sessions. You will be assessed through a series of set practical tasks, assignments, industry driven projects and portfolio building. There will also be an externally set assessment.

What next

Opportunities exist to enter the industry at junior level in many job roles, including:

  • Photography assistant
  • Design assistant

We do recommend further study if you are wishing to progress within the industry. You can progress on to a specialist Level 3 (Extended) Diploma in Graphic Design, Fine Art or Photography.

Fees and funding

This course is free if you are 16-18 years of age on August 31 of the calendar year in which you begin your studies. If you are 19+ years of age fees may apply. However help may be available. To see if you can receive any funding call our Student Services Team on 01325 503030.
Course fees are payable to Darlington College. Registration and membership fees may be payable. All course fees are per year.
