Three former Darlington College electrical installation students have been given the opportunity of a lifetime following work experience at the new Feethams project in the town, thanks to McLaughlin and Harvey Construction Limited and support from Darlington Borough Council.

Jakub Haraszczuk, Carl Ashton and Joshua Pattison have since been offered additional paid work to carry out various electrical installations on all areas of the site. This was as a direct result of a week’s work experience set up by Michelle Wheeler, Business Development Adviser at Darlington College and Suzanne Clarke at Darlington Borough Council who kindly funded the extra training required to allow the students on to the site initially.

Michelle Wheeler said ‘I am thrilled that the work experience we have set up for the lads has paid off. McLaughlin and Harvey have been excellent in their support of this, so much so we are excited to extend the opportunities of further work experience to a number of our plastering students.

‘We wouldn’t have been able to work alongside the project without the support of the council who have been instrumental in setting this opportunity up. It really has been great that a number of organisations have come together to make this happen for the benefit of these young people.’

Neil Jackson Operations Manager McLaughlin Harvey said, these guys have shown a real good willing attitude and work ethic which has resulted in this opportunity to advance their chosen careers, we wish them well for the future. This will no doubt result in further opportunities for others as we have committed to taking further students for work experience alongside our supply chain.

Councillor Chris McEwan, Darlington Borough Council cabinet member for Economic Regeneration added “It’s fantastic to see that businesses that are investing in Darlington are also investing in the skills growth of our population. This story is the result of some great partnership working between the Darlington College, McLaughlin and Harvey Construction Limited and the Council, and I hope to see many more stories like this in the future”.

Darlington College is dedicated to helping to source work experience for its students. If you are a local business that would be willing to run a placement for one or more students, please contact Michelle or Ross on 01325 503050.
