Andy Richardson, an alumni of Darlington College’s NCTJ Journalism Diploma, started his career as a trainee sports journalist. Who better to sit down and talk to him about his new role but our own sports journalism NCTJ graduate Jonathan Barber.

Andy Richardson has spoken of the importance of his previous job as a trainee sports journalist as he embarks on his new role as group editor of regional daily The Northern Echo and its associated titles.

The former Darlington College student was announced as long serving editor Peter Barron’s replacement earlier this month, having already worked as a sports journalist and as business editor at The Northern Echo.

Andy said: “I don’t think many editors would have had much of a grounding in sport at all. They often rely on the sports desk to look after it.

“I have got the benefit of knowing how sport works, I am well aware of how it has changed in the short time since I used to do it more regularly. I will be aware of what the audience want.”

Having left his job in public relations to pursue a career in journalism, the new Northern Echo editor explained how he got himself noticed in a very competitive industry.

Andy said: “At the time, women’s football was hardly being reported. There was no-one really to compete with.

“Your name starts to be known as the go-to-guy and they then test you out to see if you are reliable, can you do features as well as news?

“There are loads of routes into sports journalism. There have always been opportunities for people to do it their own way.”

So what is it that impresses a sports editor?

“All sport editors are looking for someone who is keen as mustard and prepared to do stuff that their staff aren’t,” said Andy.

“Good people get on and hard workers get on and that has always been the case.”
