Three Darlington College journalism trainees got tips from the industry’s top sports writers at a national Sports Writing Festival held at Lord's Cricket Ground.

David Burton, Nick Gullon and Jonathan Barber are NCTJ journalism diploma trainees who are interested in pursuing a career in sports writing.

David and Jonathan attended a masterclass which was hosted by sports journalists Adam Crafton who is from the Mail Online, Emma John from the Observer Magazine, Raphael Honigstein of the Guardian and Tim Hallissey who is Sports Editor for the Times.

Nick, who is a big tennis fan, listened to a talk about Roger Federer and also a cricket session featuring Mike Atherton.

Nick said: “It was great to have the opportunity to meet a number of the UK’s most successful sport journalists in a fun and enjoyable day at Lord’s Cricket Ground.

“We came away with some useful tips and advice and hopefully one day we can follow in their footsteps.”

Nick, David, Jonathan and fellow trainee Philip Buckingham have already linked up with Darlington Football Club and are covering games and contributing to Darlo Fans Radio.
