Journalism students enjoy magazine masterclass with North-East glossy La Di DaPrint Page
Darlington College Journalism degree students went behind the cover of North-East glossy lifestyle magazine La Di Da at a two-day summer magazine journalism masterclass.
The students joined La Di Da magazine editors Linda Westphal and Liz Lamb for an insight into producing the magazine as well as workshops that covered pitching ideas, writing and editing, and producing compelling and eye-catching content.
On their second day they started work on producing features and content they could see published in the Autumn edition.
Journalism Foundation Degree graduate Caroline Osbeldiston, who is about to start her top-up degree year at Darlington College, said: “I have had a brilliant two days with La Di Da Magazine. I have learned so much on how a magazine is run and what is needed of a journalist in that area. It has been a fantastic experience.”
The degree students were joined by NCTJ Journalism diploma trainees and the college’s NCTJ Journalism apprentice Krystal Starkey.
Krystal said: “I loved every minute of the La Di Da masterclass. Linda and Liz were great mentors and offered me advice and guidance whilst still making sure I retained my own creative flair. I’d love to do it again.”
Editor Linda Westphal added: “We were so impressed with the students who took part in La Di Da’s two day Magazine Journalism Masterclass. Their skill level, dedication and the quality of the writing they produced were excellent. They demonstrated an immediate understanding of our target audience and delivered ideas, concepts and finished work that we will happily include in our next issue. They are a credit to Darlington College and we have no doubt that they will go on to forge successful careers in the media.”
