A former teacher who re-trained as a multimedia journalist at Darlington College has secured a job with his local newspaper The Northern Echo.

Ian Hamilton has just completed Darlington College’s NCTJ Diploma in Journalism and is now based at the Echo’s Bishop Auckland office as a trainee reporter.

During the 34 week diploma Ian studied multimedia reporting, media law, court reporting, video journalism, public affairs and shorthand. He put together a portfolio of work experience which included hard news, features and a video and online election package featuring an interview with former Foreign Secretary William Hague.

Ian said of his new role: “Life as a trainee reporter is busy and great fun. It’s hard work – so be prepared for some long days – but if you’re looking for a job with variety and you enjoy meeting people and writing about them, then this could be the career for you.

“My advice: stick with it – and learn your shorthand!”
