Lewis Harrop, 20, from Newton Aycliffe, won the Last Man Standing European title at 62kg in Mixed Martial Arts.

The young fighter beat his French opponent in the first round of the contest at Willington, near Crook.

Lewis, a former Uniformed Services student at Darlington College, will now go on to defend the title later this year.

“I am really pleased, I enjoyed the fight, especially as it was a first round victory,” he said.

Lewis, who is from Newton Aycliffe, first took up fighting to improve his overall fitness.

“It was quite scary in the beginning and I never originally thought of fighting, but thoroughly enjoy it now,” he said.

Lewis trains a Viper MMA Club in Newton Aycliffe said the roar of the home crowd definitely helped secure victory.

“There was a great crowd and to fight and win at home is something special,” he said.

He said the support from his sponsors Tomohawk Fight Wear and Dim Mak Fight Wear had been vital.

“I am really pleased with the support I get and it makes all the difference in training and before the fight.”

Last Man Standing event was held at Willington, and the venue was fitted with a 20ft cage, top referees, medics and judges
