Talented Darlington College beauty student Helen Pritchard, a mum of five, has been awarded a place to study professional media make-up after excelling on her diploma course.
Helen, aged 37, was told last week that she would be one of just 16 to gain a place on the popular foundation degree in Media Make-Up, Special Effects Make-Up and Hair Design at York College out of over 250 applicants.
Helen, who is completing her Level 3 Beauty Therapy diploma, said: “I was really shocked. At the interview they had told me that they would be letting applicants know if they had been successful that evening or the next day, so when it had taken a week to get the phone call and an unconditional offer I thought they had made a mistake! But I was over the moon – it’s my dream come true.”
The prestigious foundation degree is especially popular with aspiring make-up artists as students have the opportunity to undertake work experience on the set of Emmerdale and will get sent scripts of the popular soap months before air to learn their cues.
The mum of five from Darlington has dreamed of a career in make-up since working over the counter in beauty shops in her early 20s. She said: “I have always wanted to work in make-up, so when my youngest started primary school in 2014 I thought that I need to go and do this for myself now. I definitely recommend going back to college to other mums. Don’t ever give up on your dreams, you just never know!”
Helen is planning to enter the national Jane Iredale make-up competition this year and hoping to go on to study the BA degree at York St John University after completing the foundation degree.
