Graphics along with other art and design students studying photography and fine art are proving to be a law unto themselves as they tap into their creativity to promote a charity ball.

Darlington College graphics students have had a taste of hard labour after being commissioned to come up with designs for promotional material with a cops and robbers theme for the annual mayor’s ball.

Mayoral support office David Allaway, a former Durham Police inspector, lent the Level 3 graphic design students his old uniform for a photoshoot to be incorporated in the imagery.

The designs will be used on posters, tickets and table menus for the annual mayor’s ball, which is due to be staged next April to raise funds for mayor Brian Jones’ chosen charities.

Coun Jones and his wife Doris will choose their favourites when they visit Darlington College on December 16

Tutor Pippa Eeles said: “The cops and robbers theme has given students great scope and the variety of ideas they have already come up with has been impressive.

“The college helps the mayor out every year and it always proves to be invaluable experience working to a professional brief, to deadline and the highest standard.”

Maisie Humphries, 16, of Richmond, said: “We have all really enjoyed the project so far. It is great to tackle something with real purpose as it gives us an insight into what it will be like to work in the industry.

“I was inspired by the original Peelers after looking at pictures from the Durham Police Museum. All I need now are some vagabonds and miscreants to go with them.”
