Course overview

This Gym Instructing and Personal Training course is designed to train you to a professionally competent level, enabling you to prescribe, plan and deliver safe and effective exercise programmes, and to develop your skills and knowledge to pursue a career in personal training. This qualification includes the Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing (Gym) and the Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training (QCF). This qualification will enable entry onto the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPS) at Level 3.

Whilst on this course you will be given the opportunity to complete a number of Level 2 Awards which could include; Kettlebells, Circuits, Studio Cycling (Spinning).

You will also develop knowledge of anatomy and physiology, fitness testing and the principles of exercise, health and nutrition. The components of an active and healthy lifestyle and the factors affecting participation in physical activity will also be explored. You will also enhance their understanding of safeguarding and child protection, employment rights and responsibilities and the sport and active leisure industry as a whole.

The  study programme will consist of 5 key elements which you will need to complete:

·         Main Qualification – Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing (Gym) and the Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training.

·         Individual and group tutorial sessions

·         Industry related work placement

·         Development of English and mathematics

·         Development of enterprise and employability skills

Entry requirements

For the level 2 you will need:

4 GCSEs grades D-E. GCSE maths and English at grade C is desirable but not essential, or an appropriate level 1 qualification and a satisfactory school report. We will request a school or college report and you will attend an interview at the college.

For the level 3 you will need:

5 GCSEs grades A*-C including GCSE maths or English at grade C or an appropriate level 2 qualification (at a merit grade) and a satisfactory school report. We will request a school or college report and you will attend an interview at the college.

A good level of ICT knowledge is required

Studying and learning

Provide education and training for sport, leisure and recreation employees give opportunities for sport, leisure and recreation employees.

To achieve a nationally recognised Level 3 vocationally specific qualification.

To give the you the opportunity to access employment within the health and fitness industry as a fitness instructor or a personal trainer.

Give you the opportunity to develop a range of techniques, personal skills and attributes essential for successful performance in working life.

Teaching will be predominately practical and will reflect a work based environment where relevant. The curriculum will be combined with ICT and theoretical session aimed to deliver the information and practical to underpin and assess knowledge.

How will I be assessed

You will have to complete a portfolio throughout the course which will be assessed at the end of the course. You will also be summatively assessed with exams included throughout and at the end of the course.

What next

The course is primarily focused to progress students into the industry. If the student does want to progress onto higher education, they can apply for Foundation Degree within a related discipline.

Fees and funding

This course is free if you are 16-18 years of age on August 31 of the calendar year in which you begin your studies. If you are 19+ years of age fees may apply. However help may be available. To see if you can receive any funding call our Student Services Team on 01325 503030.
Course fees are payable to Darlington College. Registration and membership fees may be payable. All course fees are per year.
