Course overview

Sport and exercise scientists continue to be a growing presence in the world of sport, and as we look to the future; all the signs suggest that their influence in sport will increase. It aims to provide a highly specialist work related qualification.

The Extended Diploma course you are given the opportunity to learn about sport: in a practical and applied environment. The course will provide the opportunity to refine academic studies and improve personal sporting skills.  It will prepare you for higher education or for employment in the sport and fitness industry. This course focuses on the preparation of potential university students and is equivalent to three A levels.

If you have not achieved a C grade or above in English or maths, you will as part of your course be required to work towards this as part of your study programme.  You will be given the opportunity to go on work experience at certain times during your course.

To develop your employability opportunities you may also be given enrichment classes. This may focus upon additional qualifications, industrial updating and career preparation

Entry requirements

Applicants must hold 5 GCSEs between A*-C these must include English or maths. Science is preferred.

You will be required to attend an interview at the college and we will request a school or college report.

To apply for the extended diploma you must have achieved a foundation diploma in Sport and Exercise Science.

Studying and learning

There will be numerous methods of teaching and learning to ensure the course is diverse meeting the needs of all types of learners; ranging from seminar work, individual and group activities, interactive activities, presentations, IT research based activities and practical sessions and external assessments that make up 41% of the programme on the foundation diploma and 42% on the extended diploma.

Units could include sport and exercise psychology, functional anatomy, nutrition for sport and exercise science, applied research methods, coaching for performance and fitness, specialised fitness training, sports massage and sociocultural issues in sport.

How will I be assessed

Teaching and learning is achieved by using a range of methods including formal classes, set tutorial periods and projects to support many of the formal unit assessments.  There are also two externally assessed units for both the Foundation and Extended Diploma.

Assessments will include completion of assignments, exams, laboratory based tests, practical observations, project work, presentations, report writing, class tests and collecting video evidence.   All assessments will be graded at pass, merit and distinction. You will also be expected to do independent study in your own time towards assessments.

 

Things you may need

You will be required to purchase a Sports uniform.  Details given at interview/enrolment.

What next

This course creates a pathway to University.  Many students go on to study

  • BSc Sport and Exercise (Applied Sciences)
  • BSc Sport and Exercise (Sports Therapy)
  • BSc Sport and Exercise (Sports Coaching)
  • FdSc Foundation Degree (Sports Coaching and Exercise)

 

If University is not for you, you have the opportunity to progress from the programme and with further study to become Teachers, Gym Instructors, and Sports Therapists.

Fees and funding

This course is free if you are 16-18 years of age on August 31 of the calendar year in which you begin your studies.

Course fees are payable to Darlington College. Registration and membership fees may be payable. All course fees are per year.
