This practical qualification is designed for post-16 learners who want to study media-related degree courses in Higher Education or take up an Apprenticeship. Learners gain knowledge and understanding of creative digital media production and develop an understanding of how to work within the media industries.
Tutorials, enrichment activities, work experience and independent study will also add to the programme of study.
5 GCSEs at grade A*-C, including English, or the Level 2 Certificate in Media (graded at merit or above).
In order to apply for the Extended Diploma you must have achieved the Foundation Diploma.
You are required to attend an interview here at the college and we will request a school or college report.

You will develop your skills and knowledge through a mixture of practical and theory-based sessions. The majority of units are aimed towards practical work and the development of real-life skills. You will produce and direct your own fictional film and documentary.
Mandatory modules in Year 1 include:
- Unit 1: Media Representations
- Unit 4: Pre-Production Portfolio
- Unit 6: Media Campaigns
- Unit 8: Responding to a Commission
Mandatory modules in Year 2 include:
- Unit 2: Working in the Creative Media Industry
- Unit 3: Digital Media Skills
- Unit 5: Specialist Subject Investigation
SIX additional units will be studied over the two years and could include:
- Factual Production
- Film Production – Fiction
- Single Camera Techniques
- Film Editing
Many of the units require coursework which will be internally assessed throughout the year.
To fully participate in your learning programme you will need:
- Portable hard drive (Toshiba or Seagate) 7200rpm/500GB minimum – immediately
- Extreme SD memory card – Class 10 – 32GB
- Over ear headphones
- Files for your work
- Plastic pockets
- A4 paper pad
- Coloured pens
Successful completion of the BTEC Extended Diplomas can lead to university or an Apprenticeship in Media.
Higher Education courses could include:

- BA (Hons) Film
- BA (Hons) Digital Television Production
- BSc (Hons) Broadcast Audio Technology
Career opportunities exist to enter the industry at junior level in many job roles, including:
- Video editor
