Course overview

This course will equip you with the practical skills and the professional qualification which are essential for anyone seeking employment in a multi-media setting, which could include print journalism, writing for websites, public relations and broadcast media.

Entry requirements

You will need to be 18 years of age, at the start of this course.

The entry requirements are 5 GCSEs with 4 points or C grade and above, including 4 points or C grade in English, or ideally two A Levels or a Level 2 Diploma in Creative Media at merit or above.

Many of our students already have a degree, but this need not necessarily be a journalism or media degree.

The academic qualification requirement may be relaxed in certain circumstances for mature entrants.

You will need to pass the NCTJ entrance test and have a short interview here at the college. You will need to provide a reference and evidence of your qualifications. It would be advisable to obtain some relevant work experience before starting the course.

  • Two additional modules which we currently offer; media law - court reporting and video- journalism for online

You will be taught in a classroom setting with a number of industry experts as tutors. You will attend master classes led by guest speakers and have the opportunity to interview the experts.

How will I be assessed

You will be expected to complete an amount of self-study outside college hours. You will also attend press conferences, council meetings and the law courts.

What next

After successful completion of the NCTJ Diploma in Journalism and approximately 18 months as a Junior Reporter, you may progress to the National Qualification in Journalism Examinations (NQJ), which allows progression to the role of Senior Reporter.

Career progression:

The types of careers students have progressed to include:

  • Newspaper reporters
  • Public Relations specialists
  • Broadcast journalists, including television and radio

Sports Journalism is available as an additional optional module (generally one evening per week over 18 weeks).
