Course overview

The two-year qualification is designed for post-16 learners who want to study games-related degree courses in Higher Education or take up Apprenticeships. Learners gain knowledge and understanding of creative digital media production and develop an understanding of how to work within the media industries.

Tutorials, enrichment activities, work experience and independent study will also add to the programme of study.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at grades A*-C or 4 points and above, including English, or a Level 2 Certificate in Media (graded at merit or above).

We will request a school or college report and you will attend an interview at the college.

Studying and learning

You will develop your skills and knowledge through a mixture of practical and theory-based sessions. The majority of units are aimed towards practical work and the development of real-life skills.

Mandatory modules in Year 1 include:

  • Unit 1: Media Representations
  • Unit 4: Pre-Production Portfolio
  • Unit 6: Media Campaigns
  • Unit 8: Responding to a Commission

Mandatory modules in Year 2 include:

  • Unit 2: Working in the Creative Media Industry
  • Unit 3: Digital Media Skills
  • Unit 5: Specialist Subject Investigation

SIX optional units will be studied over the two years and could include:

  • App Production
  • Digital Games Production
  • Concept Art For Games
  • Game Engine Scripting
  • 3D Modelling
  • 3D Digital Animation

 

How will I be assessed

Many of the units require course work which will be internally assessed throughout the year. All students will also complete an externally assessed project which will be set in January 2019 and a two-hour externally assessed exam.

To fully participate in your learning programme you will need:

  • Portable hard drive (Toshiba or Seagate) 7200rpm/500GB minimum – immediately
  • Over ear headphones
  • Files for your work
  • Plastic pockets
  • A4 paper pad
  • A3 sketch pad
  • Pens
  • Pencils
What next

Successful completion of the BTEC Extended Diplomas can lead to university or Apprenticeship in Media.

Fees and funding

This course is free if you are 16-18 years of age on August 31 of the calendar year in which you begin your studies. If you are 19+ years of age fees may apply. However help may be available. To see if you can receive any funding call our Student Services Team on 01325 503030.
Course fees are payable to Darlington College. Registration and membership fees may be payable. All course fees are per year.
