Course overview

This course is designed to cover all areas of media including Film and TV, and Games Development. This is a practical study programme, embedding elements of theory.

If you have not achieved a C/4 grade or above in English or maths, you will as part of your course be required to work towards this as part of your study programme.  You will be given the opportunity to go on work experience at certain times during your course.

To develop your employability opportunities, you may also be given enrichment classes. This may focus upon additional qualifications, industrial updating and career preparation.


Entry requirements

4 GCSEs with grades D-E or above including GCSE English or an appropriate Level 1 qualification and a satisfactory school report. We will request a school or college report and you will attend an interview at the college.

A good level of ICT knowledge is required.

Studying and learning

You will develop your skills and knowledge through a mixture of practical and theory based sessions. The majority of units are aimed towards practical work and the development of real-life skills.

Modules with practical assignments across the year are:

  • Digital media sectors and audiences
  • Media industry in context
  • Planning and pitching a digital media product
  • Digital moving image production (You will create a moving image production)
  • Digital audio production (You will create sounds for a game trailer)
  • Digital games production
  • Digital art for a media product
How will I be assessed

Many of the units require course work which will be internally assessed throughout the year.

To fully participate in your learning programme you will need:

  • Portable hard drive (Toshiba or Seagate) 7200rpm/500GB minimum – immediately
  • Extreme SD memory card – Class 10 – 32GB
  • Over ear headphones
  • Files for your work
  • Plastic pockets
  • A4 paper pad
  • Pens
  • Pencils
  • Coloured pen
What next

Successful completion of the BTEC Certificate can allow you to access to the BTEC L3 Extended Diplomas in Creative Media Production which, in turn, can lead to university.

Employment, Apprenticeships in Creative Digital Media:

Career opportunities exist to enter the industry at junior level in many job roles, including:

  • Cameraman
  • Researcher
  • Editor
  • Marketing
  • Boom operator
  • Production assistant

We do recommend further study on to more specialist Level 3 media courses if you are wishing to progress within these roles.

Fees and funding

This course is free if you are 16-18 years of age on August 31 of the calendar year in which you begin your studies. If you are 19+ years of age fees may apply. However help may be available. To see if you can receive any funding call our Student Services Team on 01325 503030.
Course fees are payable to Darlington College. Registration and membership fees may be payable. All course fees are per year.
