Course overview

This is an exciting course which uses a mixture of art, design and creative media to help you develop confidence, industry knowledge and skills in order to progress on to a Level 2 qualification. This course is perfect for creative thinkers and will teach you the relevant skills needed to develop your original ideas and artistic flair. You will be expected to learn basic theory and complete practical projects in a range of areas including; art, design, mixed media, photography, video and audio, and enterprise activities. You will also learn about the many fantastic job opportunities and progression routes within the creative arts and media sectors to help you begin your journey towards subject specific specialisms. If you are interested in photography, game design, 3D design, TV and film, fine art, textiles or graphics, then this course is an excellent starting point for you.

If you have not achieved a C grade or above in English or maths, you will as part of your course be required to work towards this as part of your study programme.  You will be given the opportunity to go on work experience at certain times during your course.

To develop your employability opportunities you may also be given enrichment classes. This may focus upon additional qualifications, industrial updating and career preparation.

Entry requirements

No formal qualifications are required, but a keen interest in the art and media industry is essential. We will request a school or college report and you will need to attend an interview at the college.

A good level of ICT knowledge is required

Studying and learning

Learning will take place in both classroom and studio environments. These include a spacious art studio, photography studio, iMac and PC suites, all of which include state of the art equipment and software. You will learn through assignments, demonstrations, workshops and industry lead projects that are based on realistic work. Visits and visiting lecturers form an important part of the learning process. Your work is supported with personal and group tutorials as well as guidance and encouragement from the enthusiastic, supportive staff team who are all specialists in their subject area.

You will develop your skills and knowledge through a mixture of practical and theory based sessions. The majority of units are aimed towards practical work and the development of real life skills.

How will I be assessed

Course work is continually assessed and formally marked at the end of each assignment, all assignments feed into the units of the course. For each unit course work involves working to a brief and will be a mixture of research, written work and practical work. All work is marked against the learning outcomes and grading criteria for each unit.

Things you may need

While some equipment and materials are provided, you will be required to equip yourself with a USB storage device. For the art and design units you will need some basic materials for your studies, a kit list will be provided at enrolment. There will also be a number of trips and visits throughout the course that may incur some costs.

What next

This course is designed to help you make the step to a Level 2 qualification, providing you with a clear and transparent progression routes to both Level 2 Art and Design or Level 2 Creative Media Production. The course will introduce you to a range of employment opportunities within the creative arts and media sectors and help you to make well informed choices on vocational options with a heightened awareness of employment opportunities.

Fees and funding

This course is free if you are 16-18 years of age on August 31 of the calendar year in which you begin your studies. If you are 19+ years of age fees may apply. However help may be available. To see if you can receive any funding call our Student Services Team on 01325 503030.
Course fees are payable to Darlington College. Registration and membership fees may be payable. All course fees are per year.
