Course overview

This qualification will develop your knowledge and skills relating to the clinical health care workforce and also the skills required to work in a range of clinical environments and carry out assessments or examinations.

The Clinical Healthcare support study programme will consist of 5 key elements which you will need to complete:

·         Main qualification – as above

·         Individual and group tutorial sessions

·         Industry related work placement

·         Development of English and mathematics.

Course content is made up of studying 1 day week in college (Wednesdays 9.30am - 15.45pm) and some time is spent out in a variety of placements that reflect the changing Healthcare profession.

We offer numerous work experience placements to students who undertake this course. These placements are tailored to meet the needs of the individual. Some examples of current placements are:

Mental Health Hospital – West Park

Phlebotomy Assistant – Darlington Memorial Hospital

Occupational Therapy – Community Care placements

Rehabilitation – drug and alcohol services in Darlington

Residential Care – Care homes

PTS – Patient Transport Services

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs grades A*- C including GCSE English or an appropriate Level 2 qualification (at a merit if graded) and a satisfactory school report.

You must also supply details of two personal referees who are not relatives so that the college can formally write to them to obtain up to date references to support your application.

We will request a school or college report and you will attend an interview at the college.

Studying and learning

This course covers a range of topics including gaining an insight into a clinical working environment, supporting individuals with day to day activities and understanding mental health and well-being.

Learning will take place via theoretical learning in the classroom one day a week and via placement learning.  A variety of teaching methods are implemented in order to offer maximum learning opportunities throughout this course including workshops, seminars, IT sessions, one to one tutorials and practical sessions.

How will I be assessed

You will be assessed by your tutor or assessor from your workplace practice using a portfolio of evidence, practical demonstrations and assignments.

What next

This qualification will enable you to progress on to the BTEC Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care or to pursue a career within the health sector such as a Phlebotomist, Assistant Dietician, Medical Laboratory Assistant, New-born Hearing Screener, Nursing Healthcare Assistant, or Podiatry Assistant.

Fees and funding

This course is free if you are 16-18 years of age on August 31 of the calendar year in which you begin your studies. If you are 19+ years of age fees may apply. However help may be available. To see if you can receive any funding call our Student Services Team on 01325 503030.
Course fees are payable to Darlington College. Registration and membership fees may be payable. All course fees are per year.
