This qualification will support learners to develop the knowledge and skills required to work in a range of clinical healthcare support settings such as hospital wards, health clinics, or hospital laboratories.
The Clinical Healthcare support study programme will consist of 4 key elements which you will need to complete:
· Main qualification – as above
· Individual and group tutorial sessions
· Industry related work placement
· Development of English and mathematics.
Course content is made up of 2/3 days in college (depending upon maths and English timetables) and 1 day in a health and social care placement. This course also includes a Dementia Awareness qualification.
4 GCSE subjects at 3 points or D grade and above, including GCSE English or an appropriate Level 1 qualification. You will also need to attend an interview at the college and supply details of two personal referrees (non family) to support your application. You will require a clear enhanced DBS form, otherwise you will not be accepted onto the course.

This course includes a variety of topics such as communication, person centred approaches to care, supporting individuals with day to day activities and understanding mental health and well-being.
Learning will take place via theoretical learning in the classroom and via placement learning. A variety of teaching methods are implemented in order to offer maximum learning opportunities throughout this course including workshops, seminars, IT sessions, one to one tutorials and practical sessions.
Modules may include;
- The role of the health and social care worker
- Principles of safeguarding and protection in health and social care
- The principles of Infection Prevention and Control
- Principles of Health promotion.
You will need to complete 14 mandatory units and 4 optional units to achieve this qualification.
The Mandatory Units include;
• Human Growth and Development
• Sociological Perspectives in Health and Social Care
• Psychological Perspectives in Health and Social Care
• Protection of Children, Young People and Adults in Health and Social Care
Optional Units include:
• Mental Health and Wellbeing
• Sociology of Health and Illness
• Behaviour Change in Health and Social Care
You will be assessed in a number of ways, including;
- Assignment based tasks
- Assessment at placement
- Externally assessed assignments.
This qualification will enable you to progress on to the Level 3 qualification. Alternatively, at the end of the course you will have the skills required to pursue a career within the health sector such as an Assistant Dietician, Maternity Support Worker, Medical Laboratory Assistant, Occupational Health Therapy Assistant, or Physiotherapy Assistant.

This course is free if you are 16-18 years of age on August 31 of the calendar year in which you begin your studies.
