Course overview

 

The Welding and Fabrication Advanced Apprenticeship course is designed to give you the relevant training and education required to become successful in the welding and fabrication industries. You will learn through practical and theory sessions at the college, along with work-based experience and training in order to achieve a Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship.

If you have not already done so, you will complete the Performing Engineering Operations in year one, which will provide a foundation to your Welding and Fabrication Advanced Apprenticeship. The NVQ Level 3 will relate to your specific trade.

As part of the Apprenticeship framework you may also study Employment Rights and Responsibilities and Functional Skills/GCSEs in English and maths, plus ICT.

Entry requirements

You will require a minimum of Level 1 / D grade in maths and English upon entry.

If you have not already got a C/4 grade or above in maths or English then you will be required to study towards this, and you may be directed towards the Intermediate Apprenticeship before you progress to the Advanced Apprenticeship.

  • Level 2 Functional Skills Maths
  • Level 2 Functional Skills English
  • Level 2 Functional Skills ICT
How will I be assessed

You will be required to show technical knowledge and competence through work activities.

Assessments are conducted in the workplace through observation of the duties carried out and a range of other methods including witness statements and professional discussions. You will also need to submit a portfolio of evidence and undertake research. You may be given examinations and panel interviews to ensure you have achieved each aspect of the apprenticeship.

The qualification is flexible to meet the needs of the job, however, home study and research will be required for assignments.

Things you may need

You will need to have safety boots, fire retardant overalls, safety glasses and hearing protection.

What next

Upon completion of the Advanced Apprenticeship you can progress onto Higher Apprenticeships or higher qualifications. Future careers are wide and varied after completing your Apprenticeship, and you could work in a range of industries such as civil engineering, agricultural engineering, engineering construction, ship building, and vehicle manufacture and repair.
