This course provides you with a programme of study over a range of disciplines to help you develop skills to progress your career through employment or further education at degree level. This is an award from Teesside University.
This course provides you with the skills and knowledge required as a technician in mechanical design/development engineering.
Course subject to viable numbers.
- Engineering related Level 3 BTEC Diploma or level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma.
- A level qualification in mathematics or science.
- For mature students with appropriate work experience a 'bridging' programme in mathematics may be required.

Following this you will be contacted by either the course tutor or the Admissions Department at Darlington College with regards an interview.
This course is delivered using a combination of practical sessions, lectures and tutorials. You will be required to complement your college based learning with self-study. The course requires you to complete the study of 10 units for the award of Higher National Certificate. Industry standard software will be used for CAD/CAM applications. Electronic resources will be available on LearningZone.
Four core units:
- Engineering science
- Analytical methods for engineers
- Mechanical principles
Plus specialist units chosen to cover a range of disciplines:
- Manufacturing processes
- Materials engineering
- Advanced CAD
- Business management techniques
- Engineering design
This qualification allows progression onto degree level programmes or a foundation degree. You can also progress on to the HND Level 5 and then onto a BEng Tech (Hons) Degree.
A Higher National Certificate award opens up the possibility of a career over a wide range of engineering disciplines e.g.:
- Project management
The qualification provides you with the opportunity to seek career development into senior positions in national and international companies and offers a clear route through to Incorporated and Chartered Engineering status
