This course provides you with a programme of study over a range of disciplines to help you develop skills to progress your career through employment or further education at degree level. This is an award from Teesside University.
You will have already completed the HNC programme. This course is for those learners who would like to work as technicians or technical engineers in electrical and electronics design, manufacture, maintenance, testing or fault finding. The course builds upon the foundation modules within the HNC. The programme aims to develop the management skills for a higher technician to complement the specialist academic study.

A HNC programme in an appropriate engineering discipline. This course requires you to fill out an application form, and you must speak to the tutor prior to enrolment.
To apply for this course please complete the Teesside University Online Application Form. Once your application has been received you will receive an acknowledgement from Teesside University. Following this you will be contacted by either the course tutor or the Admissions Department at Darlington College with regards an interview.
This course is delivered using a combination of practical sessions, lectures and tutorials. You will be required to complement your college based learning with self-study. The course requires you to complete the study of 8 modules for the award of Higher National Diploma. Industry standard software will be used for programming applications. Electronic resources will be available on LearningZone.
Top up from HNC to HND requires the study of 6 modules. Indicative modules are identified in the following list:
- Measurement and testing
- Advanced mathematics for engineering
- Business improvement techniques
- Project management
- Work-based learning
- Quality assurance and management
A range of integrated assignments, case studies, projects and tests are planned throughout the year. All units are assessed and graded, either internally or externally.
Upon completing the HND, you can progress onto Teesside University's final year of the full time BEng Tech Degree in your chosen discipline. Also entry onto the second year full time B Eng (Hons) Degree in a chosen field.
