Almost every area of work requires information and creative technology specialists and the industry is part of life in the 21st century. This course starts you on a path leading to a broad range of careers and is of a practical nature designed to help you develop a diverse range of skills.
Each level is one year.
If you have not achieved a C grade or above in English or maths, you will as part of your course be required to work towards this as part of your study programme. You will be given the opportunity to go on work experience at certain times during your course.
To develop your employability opportunities you may also be given enrichment classes. This may focus upon additional qualifications, industrial updating and career preparation
Level 1 - No formal qualifications are required but a keen interest in the subject is essential and a satisfactory school report will be required.
Level 2 - 4 GCSEs at grades D-E including English or the Level 1 qualification.
We will request a school or college report and you will need to attend an interview at the college.

The course is split broadly into 3 sections.
There are 2 external exams:
- The online world which examines the way in which we use technology.
- Technology systems which gives you an overview of the hardware and software used in computer systems.
You will also complete the following assessed units:
- Digital portfolio to showcase the units completed
- Computational methods
- Computing in the workplace
- Multimedia design
- Database development
- Website development
- Automated computer systems
- Installing and maintaining computer hardware
There are 2 exams. An electronic portfolio of evidence will be generated throughout the course as written and practical assignments are completed.
Career opportunities exist to enter the industry at junior level in many job roles, including:
- Games tester
- Web designer
- IT technician
- IT administration roles
We do recommend further study if you are wishing to progress within these roles.

Course fees are payable to Darlington College. Registration and membership fees may be payable. All course fees are per year.
