Course overview

The course will prepare you to work with children between birth and five years with knowledge of children up to seven years, or progress onto a relevant Level 3 qualification to become an Early Years Educator. From September 2014 the Early Years Educator qualifications will be the only qualifications to confer a licence to practice.

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs grades D or above including GCSE English or a Level 1 health related qualification and a satisfactory school report. You must also supply details of two personal referees who are not relatives and the college will formally write to them to obtain up to date references to support your application. We will request a school or college report and you will attend an interview at the college.

Studying and learning

This course enables and encourages you to develop your skills and acquire relevant knowledge to enter the world of employment. The structure of this qualification ensures you are placed in a real work environment for minimum of two days per week. You have to attend tutor led sessions, practical sessions, workshops and tutorials. A variety of teaching methods are implemented in order to offer maximum learning opportunities throughout the programme of study.

Mandatory units include:

  • Support physical care routines for children
  • An introduction to the role of the early years practitioner
  • Understand how to work in partnership
  • Understand legislation, relating to the safeguarding, protection and welfare of children
  • Understand how to plan to meet the needs of the developing child
  • Use observation, assessment and planning
  • Engage in professional development

Optional units include:

  • Support healthy lifestyles through the provision of food and nutrition
  • Support creative play
How will I be assessed

By your tutor through a range of methods This could include direct observation within the workplace, a portfolio of evidence, written assignments.

Complete a longitudinal study set by awarding body and demonstrate competency in a real work environment.

What next

Progression onto Level 3 Early Years Educator or Health and Social Care.

Employment in the workforce.

Fees and funding

This course is free if you are 16-18 years of age on August 31 of the calendar year in which you begin your studies. If you are 19+ years of age fees may apply. However help may be available. To see if you can receive any funding call our Student Services Team on 01325 503030.
Course fees are payable to Darlington College. Registration and membership fees may be payable. All course fees are per year.
