Course overview

The course will prepare you to become Early Years Educators, enabling you to work with children from birth to five years and gain knowledge of children aged five to seven years. Upon achievement of the two year qualification you will be able to enter the workforce as Early Years Educators or access Higher Education (UCAS points up to 420) From September 2014 the Early Years Educator qualifications will be the only qualifications to confer a licence to practice.

Anyone wishing to apply for this course must also complete the suitability declaration form which will be sent to you at the point we invite you to interview.

This course is delivered in 2 standalone years.  In year one you will achieve a certificate and in year two you will achieve a diploma.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs grades A*-C including GCSE maths and English or an appropriate Level 2 qualification including maths and English A*-C (at a merit if graded) and a satisfactory school report.
You must also supply details of two personal referees who are not relatives and the college will formally write to them to obtain up to date references to support your application.
We will request a school or college report and you will attend an interview at the college.

Studying and learning

This course enables and encourages you to develop your skills and acquire relevant knowledge to enter the world of employment or access Higher Education. The structure of this qualification ensures you are placed in a real work environment for minimum of two days per week. You have to attend tutor led sessions, practical sessions, workshops and tutorials. A variety of teaching methods are implemented in order to offer maximum learning opportunities throughout the programme of study. Real Work placements will consist of minimum 4 settings from birth to 5 years for a minimum of 750 hours.

The are 15 Mandatory Units including 2 externally marked asessments of 5000 words

How will I be assessed

By your tutor through a range of methods This could include direct observation within the workplace, a portfolio of evidence and written assignments.

 

Things you may need

You will need to have a clear Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) check at Enhanced Level. This will be processed by the college

Fees and funding

This course is free if you are 16-18 years of age on August 31 of the calendar year in which you begin your studies.

If you are 19 - 23 years of age fees may apply. However help may be available. To see if you can receive any funding call our Student Services Team on 01325 503030.

Course fees are payable to Darlington College. Registration and membership fees may be payable. All course fees are per year.
