Come and experience the magic of photography at Darlington College and discover why this is our ‘most searched for’ course. Our photography students enjoy industry standard facilities and expert teaching from highly skilled professional tutors. You will gain the skills required to progress into higher education or begin a career as a professional photographer.
You will develop enterprise skills, visual understanding and study historical and contextual photography to gain a broad knowledge of the Art and Design and Photography industry. You will be given live briefs set by clients such as Darlington Borough Council, Durham Constabulary, Lingfield Point and Darlington College - giving you that all important work experience required by employers. You will also enjoy the benefits of educational visits such as a trip to New York.
This two-year course is equivalent to 3 A Levels and offers you a two-year route into an Art and Design or Photography degree. The skills you will learn are not only essential for the photographic industry but are transferable to other areas such as web design, animation, games design, graphics, fine art, architecture, product design and many more.
If you have not achieved a C grade or above in English or maths, you will as part of your course be required to work towards this as part of your study programme. You will be given the opportunity to go on work experience at certain times during your course.
To develop your employability opportunities you may also be given enrichment classes. This may focus upon additional qualifications, industrial updating and career preparation.
4 GCSE subjects with 4 points or C grade and above, including 4 points or C grade in GCSE maths or English, or an appropriate Level 2 qualification at merit grade and a satisfactory school report. We will request a school or college report and you will attend an interview at the college.
You will need to bring a portfolio of work to your interview.
In order to apply for the Extended Diploma, you must have already achieved the the Foundation Diploma.
A good level of ICT knowledge is required.

You will be taught in an excellent spacious studio environment that includes a dedicated fine art studio with state of the art equipment. You will learn through assignments that are based on realistic work. Visits and visiting lecturers form an important part of the process. Your work is supported with personal and group tutorials, as well as guidance and encouragement from the enthusiastic, supportive staff team who are all specialists in their subject area.
You will be expected to devote approximately 10 hours per week to self-directed study - homework is considered an important aspect of this course.
The course comprises of a range of core and specialist units covering the following topics:
- Studio photography
- Location photography
- Campaign photography
- Advertising and promotion
- Digital photography techniques
- Web design
- Social media photography
- Specialist software
Year 2 – Extended Diploma in Art and Design – Photography
After successful completion of year 1 you may progress onto the Extended Diploma and develop an in-depth understanding that will prepare you for university or employment within the industry. You will continue to study:
• Specialist Studio Photography
• Location Photography
• Digital Image Capture and Editing
• Personal and Professional Development
• Photographic Media, Techniques and Technology
Students will compete an externally set assessment.
Previous students have progressed on to Higher Education and careers in photography in a wide variety of specialist fields including studio, landscapes, product and fashion photography.
