Course overview

Come and experience the magic of photography at Darlington College and discover why this is our ‘most searched for’ course. Our photography students enjoy industry standard facilities and expert teaching from highly skilled professional tutors. You will gain the skills required to progress into higher education or begin a career as a professional photographer.

You will develop enterprise skills, visual understanding and study historical and contextual photography to gain a broad knowledge of the Art and Design and Photography industry. You will be given live briefs set by clients such as Darlington Borough Council, Durham Constabulary, Lingfield Point and Darlington College - giving you that all important work experience required by employers. This two-year course is equivalent to 3 A Levels and offers you a two-year route into an Art and Design or Photography degree.

If you have not achieved a C grade or above in English or maths, you will as part of your course be required to work towards this as part of your study programme.  You will be given the opportunity to go on work experience at certain times during your course.

To develop your employability opportunities you may also be given enrichment classes. This may focus upon additional qualifications, industrial updating and career preparation.

Entry requirements

4 GCSE subjects with 4 points or above or grades A*-C, including GCSE maths or English, or an appropriate Level 2 qualification at merit grade and a satisfactory school report. We will request a school or college report and you will attend an interview at the college.

You will need to bring a portfolio of work to your interview.

A good level of ICT knowledge is required.

Studying and learning

The ethos of the Art Shed (as chosen by the students) is to aspire to be welcoming, creative, inspiring, unique and ambitious and we like to think that our students believe in that ethos.

You will need to demonstrate creative flair, be highly motivated with a desire to learn and have a committed attitude to the course.

Year 1 – 90 Credit Diploma in Art and Design Level 3

You will develop an “all round” perspective allowing you to focus and harness your own potential in your chosen specialist area.

Year 2 – Extended Diploma in Art and Design – Photography

After successful completion of year 1 you may progress onto the Extended Diploma and develop an in-depth understanding that will prepare you for university or employment within the industry. You will continue to study:

• Location Photography

• Digital Image Capture and Editing

• Personal and Professional Development

• Photographic Media, Techniques and Technology

What next

Previous students have progressed on to Higher Education and careers in photography in a wide variety of specialist fields including studio, location, product and fashion photography.
