Since the opening of the University Centre in partnership with Teesside University in 2006, the provision of higher education in Darlington has gone from strength to strength.
Student numbers have grown and hundreds of local people have already achieved the qualifications that they need to be successful in their professional and personal lives. The challenge now is to build on the success of the last year’s students and continue moving forward the development of higher education in the town. This has been started with plans being revealed for a free standing university building. The new £13m five-storey building, to be completed by September 2011, will be located beside Darlington College in Central Park. It will enable a significant expansion of the range of Higher Education courses available in Darlington. Duncan Bannatyne, an Honorary Graduate of Teesside University who has his Head Office in Darlington, said: 'I am very pleased and very honoured to be associated with Teesside University and now it’s coming to Darlington which makes me so proud, I am so happy with it – I think it’s a great University’ ‘I don’t think this new campus will be a success, I know it will be a success – it will be fantastic.’ The provision of higher education in the town is vital in securing Darlington’s economic future and our plans have the potential to add enormous value to the educational opportunities in the region. |
